Animal Facilities and Comparative Medicine

Rutgers shares with the public at large a concern for the ethical use of animals in research and is firmly committed to discovery that will lead to the treatment and cure of disease and physical injury. Only once it is determined that alternative methods such as cell culture and computer models cannot effectively be used, a conscious decision is made to use laboratory animals in research as it is that both animals and humans are the ultimate beneficiaries.

Department : Rutgers Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development

The Rutgers Molecular Imaging Center is an advanced facility established by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and is intended for use primarily by Rutgers faculty. Organizations outside of Rutgers may inquire about using the facility on a fee-for-service basis. The Center offers non-invasive approaches to observe disease states, disease progression and therapeutic responses in living systems and ex vivo organs.

Department : New Jersey Medical School (NJMS)

The Rutgers Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL) on the campus of New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) in Newark, NJ is one of thirteen national facilities designated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research on biosafety level 3 (BSL3) infectious agents. The RBL is a highly secure facility designed to provide an ultra-safe work environment for scientists and support staff, as well as the public at large.

The Transgenic Core at Rutgers provides expertise and assistance in the development and production of genetically modified mouse models that can serve as in vivo models for addressing a wide variety of biological questions. We apply strict conditions to keep our facility specific pathogen free and to provide a barrier environment for the housing of the transgenic mice. The facility performs pronuclear microinjections, ES cell gene targeting, and targeted ES cell microinjections to produce transgenic and knockout mice for the research community.
